Bio
I am a graduate of NSU and hold a degree in Music Business.
While at NSU, my musical focus was primarily on classical and jazz
piano, jazz composition and arranging, and arts management.
From 2005 - 2009 I held the title of NSU Jazz Lab Facilities
Supervisor at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
There I not only managed the facility and taught various music
courses, but also served as festival coordinator for the Green Country
Jazz Festival, Oklahoma's longest running college jazz festival.
As jazz pianist, I have performed with nationally known jazz
artists such as saxophonist Jim Riggs, trumpeter Marvin Stamm,
trombonist and composer/arranger Slide Hampton, jazz vocalist Kevin
Mahogany, saxophonist Bob Mintzer (from the Yellowjackets), Bobby
Watson, drummer Jimmy Cobb (from Miles Davis), drummer and
composer/arranger Ed Soph, “The Singing Policeman” Daniel Rodriguez
under the direction of jazz saxophonist and composer/conductor Tom
Scott. I have also had the privilege to receive instruction from
national jazz pianists such as the late Frank Mantooth, Mulgrew Miller,
and the late James Williams.
In musical theatre, I served as orchestral arranger,
and performed on synthesizer in Jenks High School's production of
“Seussical the Musical," and as pianist in Oklahoma City Theatre
Company's production of "Threepenny Opera." Shane also performs
synthesizer, piano, Hammond organ, and arranges music for Jenks High
School's award-winning show choir The Trojanaires. For NSU, Ohlson has
performed on synthesiser for NSU Theatre Company's production of
"Schoolhouse Rock," "Nunsense," and "Clue the Musical" in which he also
served as vocal coach and musical director.
While at NSU, during the summer months, I served the River
City Players summer review which is produced by NSU’s The Sequoyah
Institute. During that time I served as keyboardist, trombonist,
auxillary percussionist, musical arranger, and assistant musical
director. I also served as the coordinator for the Green
Country Jazz Festival, held every Spring at Northeastern State
University. The Festival is the longest running college jazz festival in
Oklahoma and brings in guests and performers from all over the nation.
In the recording field, I have performed on numerous
nationally released albums. I've had the priveledge to engineer
sessions for The South 40 Band with legendary fiddler and vocalist Randy
Crouch. I served as arranger, keyboardist, and assistant engineer
on the album Restless Spirit: A Tribute to the Songs of Bob Childers; as
co-musical producer, midi arranger, and keyboardist on the Cherokee
National Youth Choir album Cherokee Sunday Morning; as assistant
engineer on the NSU Jazz Ensemble album Hour of the Pearl with guest
artist Scott Wendholt; as co-producer and mixer on the NSU Jazz Ensemble
album Appointment in Milano with guest artist Bobby Watson;
co-producer, engineer, mixer, and performer (bonus track) on the NSU
Jazz Ensemble Album The Point with Henry Johnson; co-producer, engineer
and mixer on the NSU Jazz Ensemble Album Global Citizen with guest
artist Robin Eubanks; and co-producer, engineer, and mixer on the NSU
Jazz Ensemble Album Portrait featuring Russell Malone. Most recently, I co-produced the University of Missouri - Columbia Concert Jazz
Ensemble's first album titled VERTIGO.
